Peewee Prospects Cup – calling players, coaches, and volunteers

Alberta peewee hockey players born in 2002 will have a unique opportunity to participate in a new provincial-level competition starting in 2015.

The inaugural ATB Alberta Peewee Prospects Cup will be the start of the Hockey Alberta Development program and will be held in off years of the Alberta Winter Games. For the 2015 event, male athletes born in 2002 are eligible.

The Prospects Cup program begins with four regional camps, April 17-19, 2015. The camps will be held in Edmonton, Calgary, Stony Plain (for northern Alberta players), and Olds (for southern Alberta players). Two teams (a total of 40 players, along with coaches and trainers) will be selected at each camp to participate in the eight-team Prospects Cup tournament in Olds, May 7-10.

Currently, Hockey Alberta is looking for volunteers interested in applying for positions as head or assistant coaches, or directors of operations. Information/application packages are available for download on the Hockey Alberta website, hockeyalberta.ca. Deadline for applications is Nov. 30.

Player registration for regional camps is underway, and players will need to register for the applicable regional camp. Zone boundaries, costs and all other information is available on the Hockey Alberta website. For players in the Calgary and Edmonton zones, AA/A players can register until Jan. 1, 2015, with registration open to all 2002-born players after that.

Hockey Canada survey on cyberbullying

Hockey Canada is dedicated to “Leading, Developing and Promoting Positive Hockey Experiences”. For many years, Hockey Canada, Hockey Alberta and other Branches and Hockey Associations have delivered programming around the prevention of bullying, harassment and abuse. Technology has become more advanced; however, if websites, e-mail, texting, and social media are used in negative ways, the cyber world becomes a negative experience for children, teens and adults. As administrators, coaches, officials, safety people, parents and players in the game of hockey we all have a responsibility to stop bullying, harassment and abuse in the game. Stopping cyberbullying is an important component of this prevention. Hockey Canada is asking you to take a few minutes to complete this survey to help in developing prevention in this area. The survey will only take 5-10 minutes and your feedback is very important.

Check out the new blog on the Hockey Alberta website

The Communications department at Hockey Alberta is pleased to announce that we have a new feature appearing on the website, hockeyalberta.ca – a blog entitled, “In our Words”. Three editions of the blog have been published. Last week, Jimmy Adams reminded everyone of the importance of being safe while travelling during the winter. Our goal is to have a new edition of “In our Words” each Wednesday. At the outset, Jimmy and I will be writing on alternating weeks. If you have comments or thoughts about the blog, or a topic you think would be good to write about, let me know at blyon@hockeyalberta.ca.

Youth hockey research study

Researchers in the Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education at the University of Toronto are conducting a research study to examine youth hockey in Ontario and across Canada. Online surveys with athletes, parents, coaches, referees, and administrators will be used to study positive and negative experiences in youth hockey. This study will also examine the impact of the Respect in Sport Parent Program within youth hockey leagues. People who visit the survey will be entered in a draw to win a $50 gift card from Sport Chek or Hockey Life. The survey is available at: https://www.research.net/s/HockeyStudy

This study is being conducted independently at the University of Toronto, led by Dr. Katherine Tamminen. Hockey Alberta is helping to send out information about the study to people who might be interested in participating, but it is not involved in the study or data collection/ analysis of results. The study has been approved by university’s Research Ethics Board and it is regulated by strict ethical standards regarding participants’ confidentiality and anonymity. Hockey Alberta will not know who participated in the study. Any questions about the project should be directed to Dr. Tamminen at katherine.tamminen@utoronto.ca or hockeystudy@utoronto.ca.
